NEC Laboratories Europe have for a long time been active in worldwide standardization in many different leading Standard Development Organizations (SDOs). SDOs where the labs are active include: 3GPP, OMA, ETSI, IETF, IEEE. 3GPP: The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is a collaboration agreement that was established in December 1998. 3GPP is responsible for standardizing mobile telecommunication networks based on the radio technologies GSM, UTRA FDD and TDD and LTE FDD and TDD, all its evolutions (e.g. GPRS, EDGE, HSPA, HSPA+ and LTE-Advanced), as well as its core networks. The labs have a long and active history in 3GPP, dating back to the beginning of the project. The labs participate in RAN and SA work, concentrating on plenaries and system aspects in SA (services and requirements, LTE SAE architecture, IMS architecture, security issues and network management). OMA: OMA is the leading industry forum for developing market driven, interoperable mobile service enablers. It is the focal point for the development of mobile service enabler specifications, which support the creation of interoperable end-to-end mobile services that work across devices, service providers, operators, networks, and geographies. OMA drives service enabler architectures and open enabler interfaces that are agnostic to the underlying wireless networks and platforms. In addition, OMA develops test specifications, encourage third party tool development, and conduct test activities that allow vendors to test their implementations. Our laboratories are active in the Requirements and Architecture Working Groups, and have a long track record in areas such as Messaging and Presence. ETSI: The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) produces globally-applicable standards for Information and Communications Technologies (ICT), including fixed, mobile, radio, converged, broadcast and internet technologies and is officially recognized by the European Commission as a European Standards Organization. The laboratories have been participating in many Technical Committees and other technical groups, such as TISPAN, ITS, M2M, MSG, BRAN, ISG INS, etc. IETF: The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) is a large open international community of network designers, operators, vendors, and researchers concerned with the evolution of the Internet architecture and the smooth operation of the Internet. There is no membership but there is a wide participation from industry and the academia. The IETF defines the de-facto standards for the Internet. The goal of the IETF is to develop one common network layer standard. The labs have a long history of participation since 1998 with a focus on Internet management, signaling and control. IEEE: A non-profit organization, IEEE is the world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology. The IEEE name was originally an acronym for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. Today, the organization's scope of interest has expanded into so many related fields, that it is simply referred to by the letters I-E-E-E (pronounced Eye-triple-E). Our labs are active in several groups, including 802.11, 802.16 and 802.21. BBF: The Broadband Forum (BBF) defines multi-service broadband packet networking specifications addressing interoperability, architecture and management for broadband wireline solutions and converged packet networks. The BBF work enables home, business and converged broadband services, encompassing customer, access and backbone networks. Our laboratories actively participate in BBF in the area of broadband network architectures, including home networking and network management.
